About John

The current Director of Development for Portland Public Schools, John has a remarkable background that brings together a passion for public service with a keen sense of values-based leadership. John believes deeply in community involvement: He serves on several advisory boards here in Portland, and has been the president of his neighborhood association (Arbor Lodge), as well a “Big” with Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

John grew up in Oregon and, after graduating from Corvallis High, earned his Bachelor of Arts from Washington and Lee University. After college, John served more than two years for the Peace Corps in South Africa and then returned stateside, to Washington, DC, to serve as the Program Director for the Higher Achievement Program, a national model and award-winning rigorous out-of-school academic enrichment program serving middle-school children in urban DC.

As a bi-racial black man, John is acutely aware of and thoughtful regarding the complexity of race and class issues both locally and nationally. John returned to Oregon in 2001 to attend the University of Oregon School of Law. John is the kind of leader who can—and does—bridge communities. John Branam truly is the type of bold, innovative and compassionate leader that we need on city council!
