John has qualified for public financing! This means the campaign can no longer accept donations. Portland has a new, unique and important campaign finance system that gives any candidate who collects $5 contributions from 1000 registered voters public financing for his or her campaign. Appropriately called “Voter-Owned Elections,” this system is on a trial basis. Its success can provide a national model that eliminates big-money donors and lobbyists from local campaigns.
