Since September, John has been gathering ideas from around the city and around the country. Great ideas! Ideas how City Hall can both honor what we love about Portland and can also expand what makes our city great.
During his time, John has knocked on and visited with more than 1000 neighbors. He has been hosted at dozens of house parties, where residents have talked about their concerns and ideas. And, on any given Monday, you can find John meeting with his Advisory Board, a group of ten well-seasoned and well-versed politicos.
All of these ideas, insights and suggestions have been distilled into the following platform pieces. As always, we welcome your continued input and thoughts.
Maintaining strong values throughout my life has been incredibly important to me. From guiding my decisions about where I donate my time and money to where I’ve chosen to work and live, and how to both treat people and how to solve problems; these values have been foundational. In the coming weeks I will share more specifically what I mean by each of these values and will offer my pledge to you that as Portland's next City Commissioner, I will uphold these values for the benefit of all Portlanders: Equity, Access, innovation, civility, sustainability and transparency.
Bold Leadership is about doing more than what is necessary. Bold leadership is about looking way out on the horizon, recognizing what the future can and should hold for Portland and then crafting the plan, in spite of any impediments or naysayers. Bold leadership requires us to do what is often-times not the most fun, but is the most necessary—like shoring up our city’s roads and infrastructure. It is also about having the courage to defy the odds, utilizing all available resources and seizing the day. Bold leadership is who we are AND who we aspire be. In the coming weeks I will share more specifically what I mean by each of these examples of bold leadership and will offer my pledge to you that as Portland's next City Commissioner, I will work hard every single day to help us become the city we dream of being—and sustaining the qualities that already make our city great.
